Physical symptoms like racing heart, sweating, shortness of breath, and muscle tension are normal parts of anxiety that we address directly in exposure treatment. Rather than trying to eliminate these symptoms, you learn that they’re temporary and not dangerous. During exposures, we help you tolerate these physical sensations without using safety behaviors or avoidance to escape them. You’ll discover that when you stop fighting the symptoms and allow them to run their course, they naturally decrease on their own. This process, called habituation, teaches your nervous system that the feared situation isn’t actually threatening, reducing both physical and emotional anxiety over time.
